System boilers are a popular choice for homes all over the UK, they have a very similar system layout to that of a regular boiler except there is no need for a cold water feed or expansion cistern in the loft, which is a huge benefit.

System boilers are particularly good for homes with a high hot water demanded as they are able to deliver hot water to multiple outputs effectively.

Whether you live in a new house or old house the time will eventually come when you need to replace your boiler so knowing which one you need is important.

Another reason you might be looking for a new boiler is because you have extended your property and now need to upgrade to a higher performing model. Whatever your reason choosing the right boiler for your home is vital.

How does it work?

System boilers are part of a closed system which contains some other crucial components. This type of system incorporates a boiler, hot water cylinder and a heating control.

Most system boilers are installed onto an unvented high pressure system taking away the need for a feed or expansion cistern in the loft.

Hot water is pumped directly from the boiler into the hot water storage cylinder where it is stored until it’s required, by running a tap or shower etc.

A system boiler also directly heats your central heating system on another circuit that is connected to all the radiators in your home.

What are the benefits?

If you are in need of a new boiler and have a large property with more than one bathroom then a system boiler could be the best choice for you. System boilers have a lot of the major heating and hot water components built within it making installation a lot easier and quicker.

Because a system boiler doesn’t require a cold water cistern in the loft this could be a good option for homes with little or no loft space or if you have plans for a loft conversion.

What to look for…

When choosing a new System boiler the most important thing to consider is the power of the boiler, this is more commonly referred to as the Central Heating Output (CHO) and is measured in Kilowatts (kW). Every boiler will have a different CHO and it’s crucial to make sure that it’s sufficient for your size of property in order to meet the demands needed. If you are unsure which boiler you require then try finding out the CHO of your current boiler or seeking the recommendation from a qualified engineer.
