Most of us have a boiler in our home but we don’t always know which one we have or how it works. The time may come when you need to replace you boiler so it’s important to know which one you will need to replace it with.
Regular boilers are also known as heat only or conventional boilers so don’t get confused if you see these terms being used, they are still in reference to the same boiler.
How does it Work?
Regular boilers are part of an open vented system that are made up of a few vital components. The main workings of a Regular system will incorporate a boiler, hot water cylinder, heating control, cold water cistern/feed and an expansion cistern (both cisterns are commonly found in the loft).
Water from the cold water cistern is fed to the hot water cylinder (usually found in an airing cupboard). The boiler will then heat the water in the cylinder ready to be supplied to taps and various outputs within your home.
The second tank found in the loft, the expansion cistern is used to maintain the correct level of water for the heating system and allows for water expansion when the heating is switched on. In your airing cupboard you may also find a pump incorporated in your system that is used to circulate hot water through pipes out to your heating appliances (radiators etc).
What are the Benefits?
If you are currently looking for a new boiler then a regular boiler could be the best option for you if you have older radiators in your system. The reason for this is because they might not be able to cope with the higher water pressure that a combi or system boiler can produce.
If your household uses a lot of hot water at the same time then this system is ideal for you, the hot water tank stores a large supply of water to cope with the demand needed in your home.
A regular boiler is a good option in areas that suffer from low water pressure. They also happen to be compatible with solar water heating systems which is a great feature for saving you money on energy bills and to make your home more economical.
What to look for…
When selecting a new Regular boiler the main thing to take into consideration is the power of the boiler, this is more commonly referred to as the Central Heating Output (CHO) and is measure in Kilowatts (kW). Every boiler will have a different CHO and it’s crucial to make sure that it’s sufficient for your size of property in order to meet the demands needed. If you are unsure which boiler you require then try finding out the CHO of your current boiler or seeking the recommendation from a qualified engineer.
