What to consider when buying your new natural gas boiler...

Most boilers in the UK rely on an inbound supply of natural gas to fuel the heating energy in your home – the majority of homes in the UK are connected to the mains gas grid and so this tends to be the most common setup in British homes.

Alternatives to natural gas fuelled central heating systems include oil, electricity and Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) setups.

When choosing a new boiler  for a natural gas fuelled central heating system, there are a few key things you need to consider. These include:

Type of boiler

Different boilers are needed depending on the way your central heating is setup. More and more homes in the UK are moving to a Combi boiler as this offers you central heating and hot water by heating the water as it flows through the boiler appliance. This helps to give you instant hot water and removes the need to have a hot water cylinder fitted in your home.

If you want to have a stored supply of hot water or if the water pressure is not great in your property, then you will need to have a hot water cylinder  to retain this supply of stored hot water.

Hot water cylinders can work alongside either regular “heat only” boilers or system boilers. Both rely on the principal of stored water but system boilers are able to operate without the need for a feed and expansion vessel, as a pump is built in. It is important you know what boiler you require so if in any doubt please consult a qualified heating engineer to get their opinion on what you need.

Specification needed

The bigger your home , the bigger your need for hot water and heating. This therefore means that bigger homes typically need more powerful boilers in order to be able to efficiently satisfy this demand. Conversely smaller properties do not need to have a boiler that offers the same level of power.

It is therefore important that you understand the key specification that you are looking for in your new boiler.

For combi, system and regular boilers you will need to establish what the maximum central heating output you need your boiler to be able to reach. In addition to this, with a Combi boiler you will also need to get a handle on the hot water flowrate and Domestic Hot Water (DHW) output that you will need to be able to give you the appropriate levels of hot water.

A qualified heating engineer should be able to tell you roughly what type of power outputs you should be looking for in your new gas boiler.

Worcester Bosch boilers

With their prominent TV and radio advertising campaigns, it is very likely that you have already heard of Worcester Bosch. Worcester are one of the marketing leaders in the heating industry and offer a wide range of boilers which cater for all demands.

All of Worcester’s boilers are A-rated and compliant with the new Energy-related Product (ErP) guidelines that came in at the back end of 2015. As condensing boilers you can rest assured you will be getting strong performance levels.

The Worcester Greenstar combi boiler  series consists of 4 ranges, each containing a number of different boiler models that offer varying central heating outputs and flowrates. This includes the following:

• Greenstar I – Popular for smaller to medium properties with just the 1 bathroom.

• Greenstar Si Compact - Catering for small to medium sized properties with 1 bathroom. Similar outputs to the i range but smaller in size and able to condense in both central heating AND hot water mode rather than just central heating mode.

• Greenstar CDi Classic – all have a central heating output of 30kW and offer strong flowrates. Popular for medium to large properties.

• Greenstar CDi Compact – Small in size that the CDi Classic models and all boilers in the range have a central heating output of 24kW. Despite this the CDi Compacts can still offer strong flowrates. Predominantly popular for larger medium sized properties but can also be suitable for larger properties depending on requirements.

The Worcester System boiler  range comprises of the Greenstar I , Greenstar I Compact and the CDi Classic ranges and the Worcester Regular “Heat only” boiler  range consists of Ri and CDi models (including 1 floor standing boiler edition).

Vaillant boilers

The EcoTec series from Vaillant remains very popular in UK households with Vaillant being renowned for their customer friendly after sales service.

The gas boilers are A-rated condensing boilers and in 20156 were revised to bring them in line with the ErP legalisation on heating apliance3s, so they are up there with the best in terms of efficiency.

There are 11 Combi boilers in the Vaillant EcoTec series across 3 different ranges:

• Ecotec Pro – 3 boilers aimed at small to medium sized properties with a lower demand for hot water.

• EcoTec Plus – the widest range of Combi boilers can be found in the Plus range, where there are 5 boiler models. Ideal for medium to large sized properties, the Plus series is often able to meet the needs of most properties in some capacity due to its wide ranging capabilities. There is also a model which offers additional built in water storage if you want a combi-system hybrid.

• EcoTec Exclusive – Vaillant’s 2 most powerful models are ideal for larger properties.
